ZADER'S MENAGERIE

     It had grown dark, the moon crested the tree tops, and the only thing Zader heard was another melancholy howl echo across the mountain as he licked and closed the tiny pricks. Soon the eerie sound became a chorus as more wolves joined. Feeling their leader's anger and dismay, they cried out with him. Biting her was the last thing he wanted to do, but Skye was so sweet, he got carried away. Damn it, afraid of how it would make him feel, he hadn't planned on taking her blood.
     He didn't want to know what she shared with Leaf, Zader didn't think he could stand it when she was with him. The bloodsucking creature he was needed to taste her completely, claim her as his. Surprised anguish raced with the blood in his veins. No way was he sharing his life force, and giving Skye's mate access to his deepest thoughts. It would never, ever, happen. Yet the raw pain heard in the plaintive howl seconds ago told him there would be hell to pay for what he'd done. Leaf expected to know him in the same way. Zader felt it through the woman beneath him, didn't blame the animal one bit. What now?
     It couldn't be undone, there was no way to take it back. His cat pranced inside, yet seemed calmer in its knowledge of the woman who lay so still under him. Her mental path was open, but there was a dark spot, a place he was unable to enter. For a brief moment, Zader forgot about Leaf. No thread of Skye should ever be closed from him. This was his mate, seeing, knowing all of her was part of mating. More, if he took more blood, she'd open up to him totally. He leaned toward her, flicked his tongue across her nipple, prepared to bite again.
     Skye shoved him from her. "Zader, no… no!" Fear, or confusion blazed in her red eyes. "Leaf will kill you."
     "I'm not afraid of him." She struggled to close off her thoughts, keep them to herself, but to no avail. Anger pulsed in waves through her mind as Leaf's rage boiled over. "Skye, I want to give you every part of me, but not that, I won't let him into my mind, I can't."
     This was his mate, she should be all his. Alone. It was unimaginable to stand by and feel her pain, the abnormal fear she had of the wolf. Odd because a wolf would never hurt its mate, even the vamp side would protect her at its own peril. Zader didn't like what he felt one bit. Pushing with all his might into her mental path, he slammed the misery and pain from her, sent it with even more force back at the wolf.
     Don't ever hurt her for what I do. I'm here, come for me.
     The night lit up with howls from every crevice of the mountaintop.
     One stood out above them all. Leaf.

I hated the lie my life had become. Hell, maybe it was just this stupid-ass jacket. My shoulders rolled beneath the flimsy material, muscles bunched and knotted together. Welcome to the New Year Blog Hop! Let me tell you a story about this picture...

People moved back and forth, their outfits forming a colorful sea. Glasses clinked, paper blow-horns sqawked, and balloons popped all around. Somewhere in the room, Auld Lang Syne was chortled by patrons who'd had one too many. Standing alone, I stared at the wide screen TV in the bar's corner. The big silver ball in Times Square had made it's descent, a new year had begun. Suddenly, cool air brushed my face, sending wisps of hair tickling across my shoulders. Looking across the room, I saw him, felt his ice-blue eyes on me. Each step he took in my direction, I trembled. I'd seen him before, but only in dreams. Now, here he was--he'd come for me. Finally, he stood at my side, and I noisily sucked in a lungful of air. His arms reached out, gathered me against him. His face blotted out the lights as his lips came close to mine.

"You knew I'd come for you."

One word, soft, weak with desire, slipped past my lips, "Please..."

"You belong to me," he whispered.

His mouth captured mine, the points of his teeth pierced my lip, and he sucked the spot greedily. When his tongue nudged for entrance, I opened like a flower, and tasted the blood he'd licked from my lip.

The boistrous crowd disappeared--there was only me and him.

Continues, so does the contest--today's question is below! I said there would be surprises--and today one is happening. You'll have to enter to find out...*shameless grinning*

I promised a little history on how Shepherd's Watch came about. Growing up, I had lots of dogs, but there was one that became special. When I first saw him--I had to have him. My dad was not sold on the idea of spending money on a dog, or adding a large shepherd to our family. He said no. Needless to say, my heart was broken. Days went by, soon I went back to gathering neighborhood dogs and going on mock safaris into the woods.

One night my dad woke me up with, you guessed it, a furball in his hands. He was a carpenter and he'd made a deal with the man to do some work on his house in exchange for the puppy. That night, and every night after, until he was gone--Coco slept at the foot of my bed.

My dad passed away early this year, and for a while my writing didn't flow. One morning I woke up with a vivid memory of this, and Shepherd's Watch was born. *sigh* I miss them both, but in my mind--they're together somewhere in the universe, both watching over me.

I do have a video for Serviced (see below), and one that will combine all three books coming soon! I know, I know...you're dying to see it, right? *laughing*

I'm adding a Jimmy Thomas cover to my collection...I'm in love!! Thanks to Silver Publishing, and the very talented Reese Dante.

It's for Silver's 25 Days of Christmas anthology, which will be available in its entirety in print format. Each author's individual story will be released during December in eBook, and the cover will distinguish by color of the ribbon whether it's M/F (red ribbon) or M/M (blue ribbon).

I can't wait for everyone to meet Rad and Crayton--they'll be wrapped in a blue bow.

Fall

Hibernation time! Oh, it's so cold out...well, to me it's freezing. I'm a spring baby, I prefer summer temperatures, and it always goes too fast. I consider fall and winter a rest period. Going out in weather below 70 degrees doesn't thrill me. There's finding a jacket or coat that's warm enough, gloves, the whole dressing warmer thing eludes me. I seem to never have enough on!

Bears definitely have the right idea -- hide in a cave until the spring breeze blows!

Yet, I find the fall foliage has some of the prettiest colors. The reds are deeper, the oranges blaze like a fire. Yellow, the yellows are bright, vivid, and look so alive. I often look out my window and wonder, feeling like it does out there, how can it look so damn beautiful?

*Sigh* Me, waiting for springtime, flowers in bloom, trees opening their leaves -- nature taking a deep breath of fresh air, sending a warm breeze our way.

EXCERPT:
A scuffling sound at the opposite end of the alleyway caught his attention. He spun on his heels just in time to see a man carrying someone. The growls alerted him -- the dogs were back -- and instantly, they attacked the stranger. He dropped the body against the dumpster when the animals pounced on him. Bloodcurdling screams echoed through the quiet night. Victoria was beside him in a flash, and with her fingers in her mouth, she sounded a sharp whistle.

The dogs released their catch and swung in their direction, growling. Baring their canines, a course of howls followed before they retreated back into the street. The man scrambled to his feet and limped off behind them.

Wade broke into a run, pursuing the injured stranger. He passed the body sprawled in the filth. A woman.

"Oh, my God! Jetta. Damn it, I told you this was going to happen." Stopping at the mouth of the alley, he glanced back and watched Victoria flop down beside the unconscious body. "Let him go, Wade, help me."

He was unable to change into his shepherd in front of Victoria, and it was unlikely at this hour in the morning that anyone else would stop the felon. He wouldn't forget the man's odor.

Wade's attention became riveted to the body slumped against the wall. His nostrils flared at the familiar scent dancing around his head but he couldn't place it.

Victoria ripped a piece of the lady's shirt and attempted to clean her face. His nostrils flared wider when the smell wafted up his nose. Elegant Escorts.

This woman was the proprietor of the business he used to procure the women who met his needs. Wade had never seen the owner, but her scent surrounded her office and it had always enticed him. What was she doing beat-up in an alley, and how the hell did Victoria Germaine know her? Shit, this could turn out to be a real mess. "I got her." Wade bent down and lifted her gingerly. "Lead the way to your place."

Partway down the alley, she winced and her body bowed out of his arms. Her shirt was now torn, but there wasn't much blood and there were no visible injuries. Her fists, balled in tight knots, pressed against her stomach. Trying hard not to jostle her, he lengthened his steps, hoping they didn't have far to go.

Her hair was dark and hung past her shoulders. Pale skin revealed she didn't spend much time in the sun. Her nose turned up at the tip, giving her a young, soft look. Tears stained her rounded cheeks, and he noticed a slight swelling on the left side of her jaw.

Wade couldn't help staring at her breasts since they were only partially covered by the ripped shirt. Where was the blood coming from?

The hiss of air drew his attention. Her eyes were open. Hazel green flecked with gold. Beautiful. They stretched wide with fear. A scream full of terror barreled past her lips and into the night air. He cringed at the high pitch, his gut tightening at the sound.

"You're safe." He tilted her so she could see Victoria. The scream withered away but she struggled in his arms. Wade was at a loss on how to deal with her.

"Hurry," Victoria yelled back as she rounded the corner a few feet in front of him.

Slowing his step, he whispered in the woman's ear, "Shh, no one will ever hurt you again." He stroked his tongue over her brow and down her cheek. He swept it over her lips, and his heart bumped against his rib cage. That was his shepherd. Dogs enjoyed tasting and lapping their bodies, and anyone else's.

God only knows why, but it quieted Jetta. Dark eyelashes fluttered to her cheeks and her breathing slowed. She'd passed out again.

"I'll find that bastard and tear his hands off for daring to touch you." Energy zinged through his limbs, making him move faster. Wade didn't understand what was happening, but he knew one thing. He meant every word.

Over two hundred pounds of store clerk leered at her from behind the counter licking his lips. “Well now, honey, how can I help you?”

At least he’s clean.

“Give me your shirt.”

“What?”

“I’m speaking English, I said give me your shirt.” Reaching over, she took hold of a handful of his top and hauled his ass across the counter, dropping him to the floor.

He glared at her, dumbfounded, from his knees. “Lady, you’re crazy.”

“I’m naked, I’m hungry as hell, and I’m not asking again. Shirt. Now.”

He unbuttoned it, shrugged it off his meaty shoulders and handed it over. Etah pulled the soft, warm material on and began to button it up. From his position on the floor, the clerk grabbed her around the knees and tried to take her down.

“You don’t want to do that.” Since he no longer had a top on, she grasped his thick forearms, and pulling him up, she settled his ass on the counter.

“What kind of freak are you? You on drugs or something?”

“I’m not a freak.”

But she was. To humans her kind would always be freaks. Abominations.

Etah was Stonegar, an ancient race of statues with the ability to come alive and take a human form. They were created unknowingly by sculptors who’d over the years ransacked and stole bits and pieces of stone from the site at Stonehenge and incorporated them in the completion process of their stone and statue creations.

Stonehenge was rumored to have mythical powers.

It was true.

There were millions of Gar, even cats and dogs, with hair the color of their creators. Hers was a Dane, big and blond.

One thing all Stonegar had in common was gray eyes.

Often when working with the coarse rasps or rifflers in the end stages of refining the hair or other detailed parts, sculptors cut themselves or an old wound would open allowing blood to seep into their material and from this the statues gained life.

Extraordinarily strong, Gar could best ten or more humans in a fight. They could assume their stony form instantly, preventing any damage to their living bodies. The only way to destroy one was to literally smash it to smithereens and scatter the dust to the four corners of the world.

Her kind had remained hidden for thousands of years because they were peace loving and stayed to themselves. A smile curled her lips at the thought of how many humans reported their precious stone works of art missing each year.

Often made in groups for sculpture gardens, they were also sold or stolen, in groups, so Gar were usually surrounded by family. Etah had two brothers and she knew exactly where one would be.

Once she got her bearings, she was heading for the bitch who cursed them. The first thought in her mind--make sure her family was safe. The second--kill the witch who ensconced them in stone for twenty-five fucking years. And any relatives she had. Make them suffer as Etah had, bound in her statue.

“See the guy over there,” she asked the frowning man she held immobile on the counter. She pointed to the drunk who tried to hide by wedging his slight frame between two soda dispensers. “Whenever he comes in here to piss, you let him. And feed him every day.” Grabbing the beefy clerk’s balls, she gave a hard twist. “That way I don’t have to come back.”

“Oww! I got it, lady.”

“Good.” She ignored the sound of the door swishing open behind her. “I’d really hate to hurt the family jewels.”

“Easy, miss, I think you’ve made your point.”

Etah swept around ready to attack. She met amber pools of light that held a hint of humor. His cheekbones were high in a hauntingly handsome face, and he had the complexion of well used porcelain, soft and creamy. A blue black ponytail hung over one shoulder to his chest and was tied off with a red ribbon!

Uri decided now would be a good time to call on the angel-general. It had been a while since he visited with Michael. If he was lucky, the Fates might be in residence. In particular, Morta.

"Uri, what do you want?" Michael asked.

"Damn, Mick, you still pissed off about Northridge?" It was worse than that, but so what.

"Northridge was the least of it. My concern came with Peru. Can’t you control yourself any better than that?"

"Hey, talk to the Father on that one. It wasn’t my idea. Earthquakes are not designed by me. I just carry out orders, man."

"And don’t call me Mick. I hate it."

"Sorrrry."

Uri had tried to get a feel for Michael’s mood. So far it wasn’t good. He couldn’t tell what the cause of it was, but a good guess would be Ramiel.

All the archangels were aware he was Michael’s favorite. They’d stopped fighting about it a long time ago. In fact, for most of them it was a blessing in disguise. He spent so much time worried about hope, the rest of them had free rein in their areas of jurisdiction.

Only one thing was on Uri’s mind right now. Low and behold. He smelled her coming. His timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Decima appeared with Nona and Morta in tow.

Yeah. He loved when a plan came together.

"Ladies, such a nice surprise." Uri beamed at the Fates as they entered Michael’s office. He faced them from his seat in a comfortable chair angled close to the desk. A ringside seat to watch Morta’s delectable ass swing across the floor. His teeth were on edge. Damn, he wanted a taste of that.

She was magnificent. Damn near six foot of pure sex appeal. Venus had nothing on this babe. Her long, straight, ice-blonde hair fell to her waist. What's in a Name?

I got an email this week that made me think more about this. I'd created a name for a character that turned out to be an actual person's name and they were interested in the story behind the name. How I came up with the name was by combining the name of a childhood toy and the meaning of the word 'rare', and then I added a letter to keep the hero's and heroine's name from sounding too much alike.

Many of my heroines are named after my sisters who insisted they appear somewhere in a story. I love my sisters--they're as different as I am. Now I have girlfriends who want to be portrayed in stories. Boy are they in for a shock! Well, not really--they all know what I write about and they get a kick out of it.

For the heroes I usually use something that corresponds to where they originate from and what they are. In WITH EXTRA CREAM the hero is a jaguar so he's named Jag. He protects a compound of shifter cats that have ties to an Arizona compound. Hence, we have Jag Arizon. In SCREWED, Purple P Rose was named simply because I filled her vampyre menage with lots of purple prose. And so in that story we also have Peter Hard, Richard E Rection and Bent Staff--yes, they mean exactly what you think!

Then there are those names I used because I simply liked the name. Peri, Trent, Aldan and Bree--they are just neat names.

But I wanted to see some flowers, any color, any kind. I'm feeling springy! After the deluge of rain this past weekend, we all need a spring break. A few days of warm sun and the trees will begin to bud. My tulips and daffodils have already poked their heads up and I can hardly wait for them to bloom.

I'm antsy to dig in the dirt, plant and watch things grow. For now I'm settling for the array of color below.

I signed a contract with Liquid Silver Books for STONE COLD. This story is one I've enjoyed working on very much and the second story is completed with (I hope!) at least one more to go. I'm really excited because I know LSB is an excellent publisher and I'm looking forward to working with them.

Griff leaned to the side and saw no one. The guy said “us and we”. He couldn’t see anybody else. The big bush under the window rustled and there was a high pitched squeal. He stepped further out the door. A rabbit shot from beneath the limbs like a bullet.

A growl, low and vicious, was followed by a large spotted cat tearing off behind the small creature.

Jag stepped by him into the house and looked back toward the yard. His lips curled in a snarl. “Leron will be here in a minute. He was hungry. Hope the rabbit’s enough.”

Griff swallowed hard as a drop of sweat trickled down his back. The roar of a cat filled the air.
